What I learned from the elder statesman.

There were about 60 people, the entirety of our group, sitting in the room for an optional, early breakfast session. That alone tells you the value of the coach who was sharing stories with us.

But it wasn’t WHAT Dick Foth (pastor, professor and the elder statesman of the room) shared with us that morning that affected me so much, it was HOW He shared.

Everything Dick taught us that day, he taught us through the story of how he learned the lesson from someone else. It was such a powerful tool, and it struck me that so often we are taught by leaders telling us what they do and how we can repeat the same… But this wise man showed us that he understood things because of others.

His stories pulled me into the room of powerful people he sat with, took me to remote locations and college campuses to hear the words that he heard.

And I learned from him once again to be a lifetime learner, but also how to be a better teacher.

Wisdom will multiply your days
and add years to your life. (Proverbs 9:11 NLT)
